Some Initial Ideas To Expand DPNM’s Investor/Donor Base

The DPNM budget is very tight, leaving little room for adding new projects or for other unexpected costs arising during the year. I would advocate that DPNM incorporate new or expanded budget line items and only AFTER staff can demonstrate that there is full funding for these new work products, either through budget cuts elsewhere, or by new revenues. To that end, I have several ideas about increasing DPNM revenue. They include:

  1. Evaluating all fundraising channels for relative ROI; look at costs, and goals attained/missed. Use findings to prioritize staff hours and explore ways to optimize performance.
  2. Survey SCC members, large and small donors, and recurring donors, to see what moves them to give, and what annoys them about past Dem fundraising (e.g., tone, frequency, quality, method, platform); cross tabulate results by age and geography.
  3. Compare NPNM budgeting and fundraising tactics with other state Dem parties, to identify and implement best practices as needed.
  4. Treat donors as investors with regular “return on investment” metrics and progress reports;
  5. Include a $ ask in only a fraction of our communications with Party members.
  6. Apply for new grants from state and national foundations that align with DPNM values.
  7. Gather qualitative and quantitative info from reliable Dems, as well as Dems who do not vote regularly to identify opportunities to target programming dollars and to fund/create new budget items.
  8. Fundraise for specific new projects, giving people the opportunity for direct, tangible impact with their investment.
